Outdoor Attractions in Prince William County

With a family that begs to spend every possible second outdoors, I knew we had found a gem when we pulled up to Leesylvania State Park. Over 500 acres of land, featuring beautiful trails and located right on the Potomac River, boaters, kayakers and hikers all love this state park.

We arrived early on a Saturday, with the car full of fishing rods, ice coolers, and floats. My husband and brother were going to spend the day fishing off our kayaks and my sister and I figured we would take the nieces and nephews out on canoes.

After loading up on sunscreen, the boys headed to the water and the girls headed to the visitors center to rent the canoes. With so much to do at Leesylvania State Park, we’ve put together our list of our favorite outdoor activities.

Fishing

The Potomac River is known for bass fishing, and in the summer months when the water gets warmer and the fish become a little lethargic, the inlet near the Leesylvania State Park parking area is the ideal spot to paddle your kayak to insure you get a catch.

Hiking

This is a great spot to hike with kids and dogs. Some of the trails include wooden bridges over the Potomac, offering a really fun and interesting side besides just deep forest hiking like some nearby parks. If you visit with young kids, make sure to first go to the Visitors Center for the Creepy Crawlies tour inside the center. The park rangers will tell kids what kinds of insects and bugs that they are likely to see when out on a hike.

Canoe

A quick trip to the Visitors Center and you can rent a canoe for the hour. Paddle your way to the innet and see as the clouds and trees reflect off the beautiful water. This is the perfect activity for kids 5 and older (with parents in the canoe, too) and really any fitness level.

Grilling and Picnics

If you’re looking for a great family afternoon, reserve a grill or picnic area near the water. You are allowed to grill out, so bring all your favorites like hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salads and cole slaw and plenty of drinks to host the best type of outdoor party. If you forget anything, the Vistors Center does have some drinks and snacks available to purchase.

Overnight Boating

If you really love fishing, visit the park from March through October and get a permit for overnight fishing. You’ll be the first and last person on the water, sure to get the most out of your fishing vacation!
