Anyone that lives in Southern California will tell you that winters are their favorite season. With near perfect temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and sunsets that light up the sky, it’s no wonder that so many call SoCal home. The weather has been even more exciting lately, covering the nearby mountains with feet of snow. Just when you thought Southern California already was the perfect vacation spot, the fact that you can now ski and surf in the same weekend just made it that much better.
We sent family Instagrammers Bobby Christian and Jade Broadus (plus their 16-month old) on a surf to ski weekend, departing from Redondo Beach. This small oceanside community is known for its stand up paddle boarding with the daily sightings of whales and dolphins right off the coast. From there, it’s only a five-hour drive to Mammoth Mountain – the country’s most snow packed peak.
Here’s how to plan the perfect trip from SoCal (complete with tips on how to make the trip perfect for families looking for a great winter and spring adventure).
Where to Stay:
In Mammoth Lakes:
Juniper Springs Resort: Located within walking distance of Eagle Lodge on Mammoth Mountain, Juniper Springs has beautiful one bedroom suites that are complete with full kitchens and living rooms.
Sunstone Lodge by 101 Great EscapesL If you’re traveling with a crew, the two and three-bedroom condos at Sunstone are the place to be. Plus, they’re ski in/ski out for easy access to the mountain.
In Redondo Beach:
The Portofino Hotel is right on the water with stand up paddle boards ready to rent. You can look out your balcony window to hear the harbor seals welcoming you to the Pacific Coast.
Where to Eat:
For fine-dining: Nevados, The Lakefront Restaurant and Mammoth Rock Brasserie
With kids: Campo and Gomez’s at the Village are perfect for grabbing a hearty meal after a long day on the slopes.
Drink Up: Don’t forget to grab a pint or two at Mammoth Mountain Brewery and June Lake Brewing
Breakfast: Stellar Brew is a local favorite, Whole Toomey’s, Good Life Cafe, and The Stove are all great for families
What to Do:
Ski and Snowboard- Plan a day or two at Mammoth Mountain and a day at June Lake (about 40 minutes up Highway 395). June is more family-friendly and some great backcountry skiing.
Snowmobile: It’s a completely different, adrenaline-packed way to explore the snowy landscape. (If you have children younger than five, drop them off at the kid’s camp on Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge).
Ice Climb: This full-day bucket list experience explores the backcountry near Yosemite’s borders and is an adventure you’ll never forget.
Dog Sledding: There’s nothing like racing a team of sled dogs who are amped on powder.
Hot Springs: Check out the hot springs on the way out of town. The sunsets are some of the best in all of Mammoth.
