Sunrise over Haleakala National Park in Maui

Sunrise over Haleakala National Park in Maui

Usually the idea of waking up at 3am on a vacation doesn’t sound appealing. But if you’re in Maui, you must see the sunrise at Haleakala National Park. It’s one of those moments that you don’t believe actually happen in real life; it’s just that beautiful and peaceful. This is one of the best adventures in all of Hawaii.

Arriving to the top of the park early will give you a great spot to view the sunrise.

To properly experience the sunrise tour at Haleakala National Park in Maui, you need to arrive well before sunrise. From Kahului to the summit, the curvy drive takes an hour and a half.

The sun just starts to peek out over the tops of the clouds.

The top of the volcano will be cold and windy, even in the summertime. The wind factor is something a lot of people don’t account for, but it whips through you and will chap your face, lips, ears and hands. It is best to dress for skiing weather, which requires you to bring a few extra layers than one might imagine for a trip to Hawaii. While it doesn’t sound appealing yet, the reward is so worth it.

The prize shot of the full sun rising over the clouds.

The earlier you arrive to Haleakala National Park, the better. While the prize of the sun rising over the clouds is a gamble, it is well worth it. Before the sun starts to rise, the stars will shine super bright, highlighting the sky completely different from the sky on the main land.

As the sun rises, everyone will start taking photos. Some people will cheer if the sun is fully visible (and not hidden by clouds or fog). It takes some visitors multiple trips to get a clear sighting.

Professional photographers join tourists as everyone will be snapping dozens of pictures as the sun rises.

Until recently, you could bike Haleakala National Park for the sunrise tour. Now, you will need to catch a tour bus or drive your own car into the park an hour or so before sunrise.

If you are prepared, considered spending the morning hiking to the bottom of the volcano. This six hour hike is for moderately skilled hikers with proper hiking gear and footwear.

Once the sun has risen, you'll finally be able to look down into the volcano.

Tips for a Sunrise over Haleakala National Park in Maui: Dress warmly. Bring gloves, hats and a coat. If you arrived in Maui and forgot those things, ask the hotel concierge if they have bathrobes or an extra blanket you could borrow. Bring your camera but be advised that the wind my prevent tripods from standing up on their own. Bring any food or water you want with you- there are no services at the top.
