When it comes to visiting state parks and outings with the kids, thoughts of finding bling is probably the last on your mind. A visit to Arkansas to dig for diamonds and keep them? Well, that’s just crazy.
At Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, it’s just as normal to spend the day hiking and enjoying the views as it is to rent equipment and dig for diamonds.
Just over two hours from Little Rock, Crater of Diamonds is the only place in the world where the public is welcome to mine for diamonds and keep them.
That’s right, no matter what the rock’s value, visitors are encouraged to take any diamonds they find home with them.
And keep them they have. Since the land was purchased by the state in 1972, over 28,000 precious gems have been found with some of the larger diamonds coming in at just over 5 carats.
Some tips before you go:
Be realistic
Chances of walking out with the next Hope Diamond are pretty slim, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t dream big. According to park records, about 700 diamonds are found by visitors each year. Depending on the day and your luck, that averages out to be about two to three diamonds a day.
DIY and save some money
Rather than spend a few bucks to rent shovels and buckets from the park, save the money and bring your own for free.
Plan to get dirty
Dress for comfort and plan to wear old clothes you don’t mind getting a little grubby – not your new white sneakers or favorite jacket. After a day full of playing in the dirt, some time at the water park or a view of the sunset overlooking the Little Missouri River will feel like an extra treat.
