Lone Mountain Ranch

Lone Mountain Ranch is a special property, tucked into the mountains just outside of the downtown portion of the town of Big Sky. It is one of Montana’s oldest working guest ranches and perhaps because of how long it has been welcoming travelers from all around the world, it is also one of the best. Whether you arrive on Sunday morning and stay for a traditional week, or you visit for a shorter period of time like I did — I challenge you to leave without a heavy heart, eager to already return. There’s a lot to occupy your time, as I found, but it’s also a place of profound peace and stillness if that’s what you seek instead. Or, treat yourself to both!
From Kirsten’s trip:
I arrived later in the afternoon on my first day and immediately treated myself to a glass of wine and a roaring fire in my cozy log cabin. It was the perfect way to begin my trip.
I began my first full day at Lone Mountain Ranch by getting to know the man in charge of customer satisfaction. Sam is quiet with a warm smile and a sincere desire to see that every guest of Lone Mountain loves their stay.
This is a typical vignette for one of the guest log cabins, I remember thinking as I walked around the different cabins, “This is too perfect for words.”
Barb, a staff member dedicated to health and wellbeing for ranch guests, took me for a hike on the Ousel Falls Trail and it was there I found some moments of profound peace and relaxation. She knew just how to structure our time so that it was a good workout but also restful, at the same time
Food at the Ranch’s main dining room includes more traditional options like meat and potatoes but Chef Nick Steen also makes sure there is variety enough to satisfy every type of appetite. I really appreciated his way of doing things, and enjoyed the dumplings, plus his cauliflower “steak” enough to wish that I had more days at the Ranch in order to enjoy them more than once.
The Ranch offers a lot of activity options but it’s become perhaps best known as a place for avid fly fisherman and those who want to learn to fish. Reminders of the fact that it has been an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Lodge for 25 years, are all over the property.
Instructors are some of the best in the USA and I felt very comfortable out on the Gallatin River learning, watching and capturing the art of fly fishing with my camera lens.
It’s hard not to watch someone learning to fly fish without wanting to learn oneself. Whether I was learning, or simply watching, I enjoyed my time out on the Gallatin River so much, I almost didn’t want to go back to the Ranch.
