Philipsburg
Philipsburg Brewery: The Little Brewery That Could
I am part of it. Fully behind it. Support it and drink it. The trend or craze of drinking “good” beer, that is. Trying every possible microbrew available and giving it your two cents worth of an opinion. I have sampled my healthy share, but always get stuck on the “micro” part because it seems so trivializing.
Philipsburg in Montana is a little more than “micro,” already established and grown substantially. Now capable of getting their beer out to the masses via bottling and shipping, they’re not that big….yet.

I travel quite frequently through Montana, always headed somewhere or coming from someplace. Never have I thought twice about the Phillipsburg turnoff. On this particular trip however, I was able to kick back, take my time, and enjoy one of the most gorgeous drives I have ever taken while simultaneously tasting some of the best beer I have ever had. Here are 5 reasons why you should take the Philipsburg exit… every time.
Philipsburg doesn’t serve food. There’s not a menu to be found in the whole place. It’s a testament to their dedication – making the best beer possible.
Simple. Focused. Amazing. And why would they worry themselves with cooking when down the street is the world-famous UpNSmokin BBQ House? The brewery is more than happy to allow you to bring food inside.
Pay it forward. Buy your friends a pint and you get one free beer. How many pubs or sports bars have you been to that do that? I can tell you how many I’ve been to: 0. Why hasn’t someone thought of this simple concept yet?
Their seasonal beers are the best. I’d put money on it. When they take a flavor like pumpkin, put it in a beer and make me want to drink more and more of it, they’ve done something right. I say this admittedly not getting the whole “pumpkin” craze. Spiced lattes, cakes, pies, not my thing. When I decided to try their pumpkin beer, I about cried. I finally understood the love of pumpkin.
They are new. They’ve only been doing this for two years, and what a whirlwind it’s been. They already offer a huge variety of flavors and each one tastes as if angels brewed it. They’re on their way to being a household name so get to know them before they blowup.
Most importantly, when you walk through those doors, meet the people that are pouring their blood, sweat and tears into your glass. Behind the bar or washing the tanks, pause and you will feel their commitment. Their dedication. If you want to see someone’s passion for their craft, you only need to order a beer and watch, as it literally flows into everything they do.
