There are many educational programs offered by the museum; I personally saw several classrooms walking through the galleries while I was there and their excitement was evident.
I already have plans to take my own daughters through over their school break.
What I loved most about the museum is that they don’t sugar coat what war is yet at the same time there weren’t any exhibits that I felt my 7 or 9-year-old couldn’t handle (my personal opinion). It’s a great way to spend the day, there’s even a place to stop for lunch – a diner with pictures of Marines preparing food for the Mess as well as a tavern. And Semper Fidelis Memorial Park, a park dedicated to the service of all Marines and filled with monuments, is just outside the museum if you need to get out and stretch your legs.
Kids will really get into the displays and incredible guides. My guide was a marine himself and offered a lot of personal knowledge and stories that truly added to my experience at the musuem.
“Don’t forget to look up.” This was a suggestion from my tour guide and it was great advice. There is so much to see all around you, some of the best things being above your head! I would have missed so much had she not mentioned that and I encourage you to do the same on your visit. But, don’t worry, even if you forget to look up, there is so much to see and do that you’ll have a ball while you look back at our history through the eyes of a marine.
