If you’re family is anything like mine, you need to have a list of attractions and activities they can do when you embark on a family vacation. I always want the kids to learn something, have an adventure or two, and be able to run around to get all that amazing kid energy out. On our recent family vacation to Northern Virginia and Prince William County, we were able to cross each of those things off the list.
Here’s our list of the best family adventures in Prince William County (featuring stops in Dumfries, Haymarket, Manassas and Woodbridge):
For kids under 10:
Leesylvania State Park– This Park is really perfect for kids and adults of all ages. With incredible bass fishing, kayak and canoe rentals, and dozens of hikes with views of Potomac River, you’re bound to find something for every adventure lover in your family.
Splashdown Waterpark– This waterpark has all the fun of the beach, without the lengthy drive to the coast. With a 770-foot lazy river, 2 four story high waterslides and even swimming lessons, you can take the young kids and the adults for great family fun. Make sure to check the season, though, as it is closed during late Fall through early spring.
Yankey Farms– This might be best known for their ‘you pick ’em’ farms, where you can pick fresh strawberries and pumpkins right where they grow. In the fall, this is a must for anyone visiting the area as its one of the only you pick em pumpkin patches with a corn maze and cow train.
Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge- Are your kids looking to be little scientists? Taking them to Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge can get their imagination going with dozens of bird sightings. Bring a bird book along to see if you can spot any of the famed Ospreys that call this area home.
For teenagers:
National Museum of Marine Corps- Besides being an incredible tribute to the Marines who serve our country, the museum is stimulating for kids of all ages, truly. The lay out makes it easy to learn about each time period that Marines served in and the aircrafts and marine vehicles really brought the whole scene to life. Admission is free and should be added to everyone’s itinerary.
Bull Run Mountains– If you’re looking for a great place to let off some steam, find solitude or just want to work up a sweat, the Bull Run Mountains are the perfect escape. With many high quality trails, well marked so even the novice hiker can reach the top, you are sure to fall in love with this hike.
NOVA BMX Track- Talk about adventure- how much more adventurous can one get than BMX riding! Learn the ropes at the new NOVA BMX track, where you can rent a bike for a day or get a 30-day pass. I guarantee you’ll have a blast!
Ben Lomond Historic Site– With so many museums and historical battlegrounds in Prince William County, it’s really important to find the ones that offer an interactive approach to learning the history. My favorite was the Ben Lomond Historic Site, where they’ve gone into great detail to add staged experiences throughout the site. Your kids will be able to walk into the slave quarters and see what life was like then and later move onto the operating room, where they’ll see some of the instruments used in that time period.
Weems Botts Museum and Ghost Tours– This small museum in Dumfries is very special for the Civil War history buff, but occasionally the museum also hosts ghost tours of the nearby area and museum. The museum has seen many paranormal activities within it’s haunted walls. Check the website for the next ghost tour or Ghost Tour lock-in.
