Despite it being located in super touristy Old Quebec City, Chez Temporal is a tiny haven away from the crowds and is very authentically French. Perhaps because it is tucked in the winding cobbled streets of the old city, in an area filled with splendidly old-fashioned looking shuttered apartments with wrought iron balconies, it stays serene and quiet – a great place to sit and relax for a while.
Chez Temporal has been serving up bowls of coffee and delicious breakfasts and lunches since 1974. The decor doesn’t appear to have changed much since then, which adds to its charm. Chez Temporel has always been a popular spot with students and artistic types, and the clientele is mostly French speaking: When visiting, you feel as though you’re observing the locals in their natural habitat.
For a perfect leisurely luncheon, do try the Croque Monsieur, washed down with a Belle Gueule (delicious local beer) as it is very, very good. The croissants were also great, and the coffee is superb (the bowls of cafe au lait are heavenly). When in Quebec City, Chez Temporal is somewhere I make sure to visit often. The welcome is always warm, and the environment soothing.
Chez Temporel is located at 25 Rue Couillard, in Old Quebec City
