Become the most interesting person in the world.

Take up a new hobby. Snow shoeing, archery, martial arts, fly-fishing, there’s a wealth of resources like dabble.co to teach you new crafts and expand your skillset. REI and Bass Pro also offer a variety of free and paid classes for outdoor activities across the country.

Take advantage of the seasons.

It’s the perfect time for a powder day, so what are you waiting for? Or use the cold as an excuse to work on your mid-winter tan by hitting the beach.

In fall, make sure you go somewhere to see the changing of the leaves, and in spring, enjoy a leisurely stroll through a fresh farmer’s market while everything’s in bloom.

Write things down.

One of my biggest travel regrets is not keeping a journal. Sure, Facebook’s great for tagging where you are, but it’s not the place to keep track of how a place made you feel.

You never know when you’ll want to look back at all the adventures you’ve taken to relive the moment. And what a great memento you can show the kids someday!

Expand your taste buds.

Get adventurous by trying local delicacies and cuisines. If you don’t want to go as far as eating bugs in Thailand or guinea pig in Peru, try a Korean BBQ restaurant, which is a more unique cook at the table style meal than Japanese Hibachi and great for groups. Turkish cuisine is another personal favorite, not that far off from Greek food, but with an extra punch of flavor.

Travel with someone new.

If you’re always dragging the kids around, take a girlfriends getaway to do something for yourself. If you usually travel with friends, try a solo trip. Just mixing up the company can offer a whole new wealth of opportunity because who you’re with really defines the experience.

Do something that terrifies you.

Whether it’s as extreme as skydiving or shark diving or merely testing your fear of heights on the CN Tower or Sky Ledge, conquering a fear is one of the most rewarding feelings you can have. Much more so than attempting to stick to the New Year’s diet, anyway.
